Osceola killed US Indian Agent Riley Thompson on Dec. 28, 1835. Then, with his followers, he shot six others outside Fort King in north-central Florida. These events and the concurrent Dade Massacre, marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War, 1835 to 1842. The lithograph is based on a January 1838 portrait by George Catlin, painted when Osceola was imprisoned by the US Army and ill with malaria (BSLOC_2019_8_63).
