War of 1812, Battle of New Orleans, Jan. 8, 1815. Conjectural scene of General Andrew Jackson exhorting the defenders of New Orleans to attack the advancing British soldiers. Reproduction of a painting by E. Percy Moran, c. 1910. Unseen is the American artillery, which included gunners from Jean Lafittes band of privateers and pirates. Without the big guns, the green US militia forces would have been encircled by the British (BSLOC_2019_6_83).
