Framed Print of BAPTISM OF POCAHONTAS, by John Gadsby Chapman, 1839, displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda
BAPTISM OF POCAHONTAS, by John Gadsby Chapman, 1839, displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Pocahontas, daughter of the influential Algonquian chief Powhatan, was baptized and given the name Rebecca, in an Anglican church at Jamestown, Virginia, 1613 or 1614. Standing behind her is John Rolfe whom she married on April 5, 1614. Reverend Alexander Whitaker officiates. At left in armor is Sir John Dale, who brought order to Jamestown by imposing martial law on the dissolute and chaotic early colonists. At right are Pocahontass family, including her tall uncle in tan robes, Opechancanough, Powhatans brother, who became paramount on Powhatans death. In March 1622 he provoked the Second Anglo-Powhatan War (1622-32) (BSLOC_2020_1_150).
